Ninjas Wanted - "Warlord Tourism"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-35800429

Applications are invited from anyone over the age of 18:

"Sharpen your shuriken, Japan's Aichi prefecture is looking to hire six ninjas in a bid to boost tourism.

The roles are full time and the pay is ¥180,000 ($1,600; £1,100) a month, the job ad says (in Japanese).

Physical fitness and acrobatic skills are a must says Aichi prefecture, which hopes to promote "warlord tourism".

Ninjas were 15th Century Japanese mercenaries specialising in espionage, assassination, sabotage and other forms of irregular warfare.

Such trickery was considered beneath the samurai, or military nobility, who had to observe strict rules on fighting honourably."

"The job specification has been somewhat changed for the advertised roles.

It involves stage performances and "PR work" for radio and television. Combat experience as a ninja is not required and a track record of killing people for money would not help your application.

Ideal candidates should "enjoy being under the spotlight even though he or she is a secretive ninja," Satoshi Adachi of the prefecture's tourism promotion unit, told AFP.

As the troupe will sometimes perform in English, Japanese language skills are preferred rather than essential, Mr Adachi said, although a passion for history and tourism is a requirement.

Training is also a little quicker these days: winning applicants will be up to speed in the arts of wooing tourists with back flips and sword play by the end of April."

"Successful applicants will be performing in Nagoya Castle and various other locations.

Aichi prefecture may be hoping to see some of the success seen by neighbouring Mie prefecture's Ninja museum in Iga city, which combines historical details with acrobatic performances inspired by tales of the ancient warriors.

Iga, which brands itself as the "home town" of ninja, was once home to many ninjas, also known as shinobi, who emerged as a distinct phenomenon in the volatile "warring states" period of the 15th Century. They gradually disappeared as Japan was unified in the 17th Century."

"While ninja were a very real historical phenomenon, much popular folklore about them is based on legend and myth.

But while once they were looked on as little more than a historical curiosity of more interest to foreigners than Japanese themselves, prefectures are increasingly keen to capitalise on historical ties to tap into the country's tourism boom.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged to increase tourism even further in the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Anyone over 18 can apply to be a ninja in Aichi, and applications close on 22 March."

Any members of the Welcome to Yorkshire team should receive preferential treatment...

OJs: 'Dangermen' at Welsh Mine

http://www.recruitmentgrapevine.com/article/2016-01-12-dangermen-wanted-...

"A company in Wales has advertised for a rather unusual position, which requires applicants to have a head for heights and also be able to sing a cappella.

Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog asks for candidates who are “physically fit and strong and able to work in semi-darkness.”

Aww:  http://cambrian.holdingarea.co.uk/article.cfm?id=102528&headline=Dangerm...

"AFTER a nationwide search for people with unusual skills, Llechwedd Slate Caverns has successfully recruited two dangermen to work on its pioneering new visitor experience.

Iago Morgan Jones and Keirren Jones, both from Gwynedd, will play a key role in Llechwedd’s exciting new deep mine tour, which opens in March 2016.

The dangermen recruits, who speak Welsh and English, are circus-trained and specialists in aerial acrobatics.

Iago is a director at the Cimera Circus, a social enterprise company based in Caernarfon. Keirren is a former army gunner who served in Afghanistan and east Africa before joining Cimera and training in trapeze and aerial stunts.

Both say they are delighted with their highly unusual roles.

As Llechwedd’s dangermen they will work deep underground but at substantial height – up to 150 foot – above the mine’s floor level.

Llechwedd is being tight-lipped about the precise details of the new attraction, but says that it will feature extraordinary light projections, enhanced reality technology and explosive special effects which will transport visitors to ‘another time and place’."

"Senior councillors have over-ruled one of their own committees which had given new hope for the future of Whitby’s tourist information centre.

At the borough council’s full council meeting yesterday (Tuesday) it rejected recommendations by the health and well-being scrutiny that had been made just the week before following a two and a half hour debate.

The scrutiny committee had agreed that other options be explored which would have given community groups time to put bids in to take over the running of the facility such as the one pictured."

A cliff (rope) rescue technician has to go over the cliff to rescue anyone in trouble. But the coastguard needs more volunteers.

Matthew Atkinson, senior coastal operations officer, said "Without a rope rescue capability, people using our coastline could be put at serious risk.

"Our training is a programme taking a new recruit from a foundation skill level right through to the top competency levels required in the rope rescue syllabus.

"We train, we encourage and we test our coastguard rescue officers to make sure they meet all those standards.

Odd Jobs: Tea Total

http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/wanted-trainee-to-travel-the-world-a...

"IT’S a job many would die for: travelling the world working at the top of your game - and drinking as much tea as you could dream of.

Taylors of Harrogate is searching for a trainee tea buyer, who will, alongside tasting hundreds of teas per week, travel to far-flung corners of the globe to meet the tea and coffee growers that make Yorkshire Tea and its other products so distinctly tasty.

"The right candidate for the rare position will start in the tea tasting room, organising samples and preparing tasting batches, as the palate is trained to pick up the delicate sensitivities of a brew, and the “unique” language of the tea industry is picked up. Up to six months of the initial training will be spent abroad, visiting Africa and Asia....

“Tasting is something you have to learn. They say 95 per cent of us can technically be trained as a professional taster. It’s about teaching your tongue as a muscle to pick up the skill.”

Working alongside people with 30 years’ experience tasting certainly helped - especially when it came to getting to grips with the language of tea.

“When we’re evaluating different teas, we use words and phrases in a way I’d never heard them used before,” Mr Boocock said. “Sometimes, for example, we’d say a tea was brisk, gutty or useful - which means it would be a good tea for us. But if you were ear wigging on the conversation a few eyebrows might get raised.”

Virgin Hunts New Train Drivers

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/14788340.Virgin_hunts_new_train_dr...

Erm ...  nope none around here.;-?

"VIRGIN Trains has launched what it claims is the largest recruitment of train drivers on the East Coast Mainline since the 1980s.

The firm said it was offering drivers the chance to be part of a “new era” of rail as the search for new recruits coincided with the arrival of its new fleet of Azuma trains, built by Hitachi at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.

In all 78 drivers are required to operate the 65 strong fleet when it launches in 2018. However would-be recruits, who must be 21 or over, only have a week in which to reply.

Virgin has already signed up 24 trainee drivers in January, the first such appointments for nearly three years.

New recruits undergo a year-long development programme including classroom-based and ‘on the job’ learning at different locations on the East Coast route.

They also use a state of the art state of the art simulator in order to familiarise themselves with the train cab.

The new fleet will provide an extra 12,200 seats, while there will also be a new and expanded timetable.

Clare Burles, people director at Virgin Trains East Coast, said: “The arrival of our Azuma trains is an important part of our plans and we need amazing people to join us on our journey.

“It doesn’t matter if you have never worked in rail or if you haven’t even considered a career as a train driver before, we are looking for people who are not afraid to do things a little differently and want to be part of something innovative and rewarding.

“As a train driver with us, you’ll not only get fantastic benefits and career development but also spectacular views of the iconic intercity East Coast route from a very unique working environment –how many jobs can offer you that?”

Tara Johnson, a driver for Virgin Trains east coast, said: “I love the freedom and benefits of the role and there is never a boring day on the job

“It’s a lot of responsibility too – the safety of our customers and getting them to where they need to be on time is top priority but the training and support we receive is brilliant.

“Some people ask what it’s like to be in the cab solo but it really doesn’t feel like that. I always feel part of a team.”

A spokesman for Virgin East Coast said retirements were another factor in the recruitment drive and it was not connected to the current dispute with the RMT rail union.

To find out more about the application process – which ends on Friday October 14 – visit www.virgintrainseastcoast.com/about-us/azuma-train-driver/what-happens-n... "

"Mining to dining

According to Shore Capital the Hancock investment fits snugly with Gina Rhinehart’s ‘mining to dining’ strategy.

The billionaire’s company is best known for its iron ore operations in Australia’s Pilbara region, where it runs mines with Rio Tinto. bBut, it has in recent years, it has invested in agricultural assets.

In partnership with a Singapore investor, it bid A$365mln for a cattle operation spanning an area (almost) the size of Scotland.

“Hancock’s recent focus on agriculture was the result of it identifying a fast-growing Asian demand for higher-quality foods," said Shore analyst Yuen Low.

“We believe that Hancock identified an investment in Sirius as a logical, complementary extension of this strategy.”

Low, in a note, said significant tracts of farmland in Asia suffer low productivity due to salt-induced degradation."

http://www.whitbygazette.co.uk/news/change-is-like-marmite-1-8277830

"And Ed Balls remained in Strictly Come Dancing only by popular vote! Popular mood seems to be anti-establishment, favouring underdogs who chime with us. However, it’s a change we’ve little experience of in serious matters and few case studies on which to predict.

At school I learnt about the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions. Cars from Ford’s plant in Dagenham passed my school bus stop, evidence of assembly line mass production. I worked through an era of profound change to digital technologies and on into the Knowledge Revolution. We tried to protect our valuable knowledge assets while moving manufacturing itself to low cost countries like China.

Twenty five years ago I came across technology for the military which I thenth ought incredible. It was manufacturing on demand aboard naval ships. If a part is needed, make it with instructions downloaded from the ether.

I was working on similar research for the construction industry. And guess what? It has happened via robotics and developments such as 3D printing which forms intricate parts layer on layer.

In 2010 I had a crown replaced. My mouth was scanned and I saw displayed a 3D model of my teeth, and the gap. A digital tooth was then placed and adapted to fill the gap, with the data transmitted to a micro-lathe to duly sculpt my new crown.

In the future, such technologies may bring manufacturing back by parts being made on demand, locally.

Couple that with a ubiquitous shift to self-service, drone delivery and the requirement to be online to do anything much, and you can appreciate how difficult change can be for some of us to even grasp an idea, let alone understand it.

Thus, I’m seriously considering proposing a programme of talks on Technology Awareness for Dummies (TAD), in aid of our wellbeing.

Technology should be our servant not master. That requires ‘techies’ to reach down to our level and us to reach up to grasp the basics of the new 3 R’s! The Marmite test. Do you hate, love or simply accept change? It depends on the change and how it might impact you, of course. Like it or not change seems set to continue apace and more widely, affecting the way familiar services are provided to us. A concern is that the ‘old’ qualities (which are bang up to date) of relationships between people should not be lost; we must and can do something locally about that ourselves.

A phrase has been coined for the era we appear to be entering -‘Post-Truth’. It refers to a new culture of political debate with calculated focus on emotions, while dismissing policy detail (the facts).

There are repeated assertions using headline-grabbing sound bites that drown out opposing factual argument. Social media feeds it.

Brexit and the US election thrived on it and the associated verbal abuse.

What of local change?

Whitby faced industrial and social change many times in the past and looks set to do so again with new offshore supply services and major mining.

Changes often hold Marmite challenges but whether we are personally for or against something, I hope we can be passionate in different views without treading a Post Truth path."

Some of them are silly, but if you think about it, these questions probably haunt you too!

Can you cry under water?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up like every two hours?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?

Why did you just try singing the two songs above?

"8:02am 28th January 2017
(Updated 9:12am 28th January 2017)

Scarborough-based business man Ben Stonehouse is seeking crowdfunding to help restore a Sea King helicopter with the aim of creating a unique café experience.

The self-confessed helicopter enthusiast, purchased the XZ598 – HAR.3 Westland Sea King helicopter, which was a former Search and Rescue helicopter based at RAF Leconfield, in an auction earlier this month.

Ben has begun sourcing the missing parts to renovate the helicopter with a view to restoring it back to its former glory.  So far, he has successfully sourced five main rotor blades.

Commenting on his recent purchase, Ben said:

“This is a very exciting opportunity for people to get involved in a truly unique project.  While this has always been a dream of mine – to own my very own helicopter – I know there will be lots of people out there who would like to be part of that dream too.

She’s in a pretty sorry state at the moment, but if I can raise some additional funding I can purchase the missing parts and continue to restore her back to her former glory.  She won’t ever fly again, but by creating a café in a unique setting means people will be able to enjoy the helicopter experience without needing to take to the skies.”

Ben is offering a package of incentives to those who can invest in the Sea King Café Project.

The package includes: free coffee at the café for a year, customised T-shirts, a private launch party event, your name on a rotor blade and an opportunity to name the helicopter.

For more information about the project and to pledge your support visit http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/sea-king-cafe"

Mr Frydenberg has condemned the plan announced today as a “$550 million admission of failure” and “a warning sign to other states”.

The Turnbull government is now seeking legal advice on whether the decision today is a breach of national electricity market rules.

“Going it alone created South Australia’s problems and going it alone won’t fix South Australia’s problems,” Mr Frydenberg told reporters in Canberra.

The Ides of March

http://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/roman-omen-an-irishman-s-diary-about-t...

" ‘The lingering infamy of March 15th 44 BC may have been a factor in the UK amending its schedule for triggering article 50, which was originally planned for today’

"Frequent misspelling apart, auguring remains an important feature of modern political life, just as it was in Rome 2,061 years ago on this date. As recently as last week, the lingering infamy of March 15th 44 BC may have been a factor in the UK amending its schedule for triggering article 50, which was originally planned for today.

According to the Daily Telegraph, at least one government minister was appalled by the symbolism of Brexit beginning “on the Ides of March”. So instead, now, it will happen later in the month.

The ever-rational Dutch, by contrast, were sufficiently relaxed about the date to have a general election today. Let’s hope they don’t live to regret it.

Rome’s original augur were religious officials who studied the behaviour of birds and other animals, seeking signs (or “auspices”) of how the gods felt about any course of action. They were arguably the forerunners of today’s political consultants, albeit that the latter now have the benefit of opinion polls, which are at least presumed to be more scientific.

Wing of augury

In 44BC, concerns about Julius Caesar’s fate began a month before his assassination, when the haruspices – a specialist wing of augury, whose members interpreted the entrails of sacrificed animals – noticed some disturbing trends.

First, a bull Caesar had sacrificed was found to have no heart. Even by the standards of the time, this must have been well outside the plus-or-minus three per cent margin for error. But in case it was an “outlier”, they carried out another sacrifice, and the second animal was found to have a defective liver.

Caesar’s life was therefore deemed to be in danger for the following 30 days, although he himself was not too worried. In any case, he was almost in the clear by the fatal morning. Then, Shakespeare has him mocking a soothsayer, viz: Caesar – “The Ides of March are come.” Soothsayer - “Ay, Caesar, but not gone”.

Twenty-three stab wounds later, the victim was uttering another now-famous phrase “Et tu, Brute?” And ever since, this has earned him the gratitude of political headline writers, renewed each time a two-faced politician with a B-name – this time last year it was “Et tu, Boris?” – makes the news.

A little disappointingly, it’s unlikely such a line was uttered in real life – that was Shakespeare again. Historians suggest Caesar said nothing intelligible, and was more preoccupied at the end adjusting his toga.

The Romans’ calendar is still very much with us, in modified form, but the Ides of March is now the only vestige of a strange and uncharacteristically inefficient system by which they used to keep track of days.

For reasons best known to themselves, they identified three key dates in every month: the first (kalends, from which we get calendar), the one in the middle (ides), and a day in between those two (nones). Then they counted back and forth from each to get the date.

So every month had an ides, more usually on the 13th than the 15th. But one never hears now of the Ides of January, for example: even though, for added portent, that was a Friday 13th this year.

"Auspicious

If augur is constantly confused with the unrelated auger, meanwhile, it’s odd how other, closely linked Roman words have drifted apart. Consider the adjective “auspicious”, which still means much the same as it once did, minus the avian input (although the most recent mention in the Irish Times archive had even that, thanks to the Chinese Year of the Rooster).

Contrast this with “auspices”, the root noun. Now invariably used in the phrase “under the auspices of”, it has become a word beloved of bureaucrats and administrators. Whatever about the thing under the auspices, the auspices themselves are always located in the headquarters of an organisation: the HSE, for example, or the Department of Finance. And the word somehow implies sensible management, not (we hope) people who base their decisions on the behaviour of birds."

Ah, so ... Valentinos

"Spurinna was a haruspex. His calling was vital, if a little unusual, requiring him to see the future in the warm entrails of sacrificial animals.

At the great festival of Lupercalia on the 15th of February 44 BC, he was a worried man. While priests were running around the Palatine Hill hitting women with thongs to make them fertile, Spurinna was chewing over a terrible omen...."

"... The two main political parties mechanically and vacuously repeat the slogan that Brexit means Brexit and that the United Kingdom must leave the Single Market. They are like the citizens of Denmark who refused to admit their king was going past without any clothes on. King Brexit is similarly naked.

Common sense therefore would suggest that it is time to take stock of the situation before stumbling further into the abyss. The Government should, therefore, give MPs a free vote as to whether to hold a second referendum.

If the House of Commons said no, then the buck stops firmly with Parliament. If a referendum is called, and the people voted to remain, then that would
clearly instruct the Parliament not to
do a Brexit deal.

It is possible however, on further consideration of the new evidence and changing circumstances outlined above, that the voters on second thoughts will change their minds, as they do about general elections. In which case, Parliament would resume normal service with the EU. The business community, the NHS, the universities, the farmers and even the local authorities would all breathe a sigh of relief, because they would have escaped from a perilous future.

However it seems very unlikely that the two main political parties would have the courage and the common sense to endorse this approach, because they are fearful of the anti-immigrant feeling in the country which determined the referendum last year, even though most of the concerns were shamefully related to prejudice against coloured immigrants, which has nothing to do with EU membership. The naked King marches on..."

Hocus Pocus

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/help-wanted-why-republicans-wont...

"The White House disputed the notion that the administration has a hiring problem and noted that its candidates must be vetted by the FBI and the Office of Government Ethics before being announced publicly, which might contribute to the perception that there is a delay in filling key posts.

“I have people knocking down my door to talk to the presidential personnel office,” said White House press secretary Sean Spicer. “There is a huge demand to join this administration.”

The White House picked up the hiring pace in May and the first half of June, particularly for positions needing confirmation. It has advanced 92 candidates for Senate confirmation, compared with 59 between Trump’s inauguration and the end of April.

But the Senate has just 25 working days until it breaks for the August recess. At this point, Trump has 43 confirmed appointees to senior posts, compared with the 151 top political appointees confirmed by mid-June in President Barack Obama’s first term and the 130 under President George W. Bush, according to data tracked by The Post and the nonpartisan Partnership for Public Service’s Center for Presidential Transition...

But as the president continues to sow doubts about his loyalty to those who work for him, most recently with his tweets on Friday that appeared to attack Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, a number of qualified candidates say they see little upside to joining government at this time. They include eight Republicans who said they turned down job offers out of concern that working for this administration could damage their reputation.

Republicans have become so alarmed by the personnel shortfall that in the past week a coalition of conservatives complained to White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus. “We remain very concerned over the lack of secondary and tertiary executive-level appointments,” they said in a letter signed by 25 prominent conservatives called the Coalitions for America, describing their concern that the leadership vacuum will create “mischief and malfeasance” by civil servants loyal to Obama...

... some candidates have faced inexplicable delays on job offers. “People are waiting to hear back. Promises are made but not kept. People are left stranded. Positions are implied, and people are left hanging.”  In a town where the long hours and financial sacrifice of working in government are outweighed by the prestige of a White House or agency job, the sacrifice is beginning to look less appealing...

“Everybody’s trying to draw cosmic conclusions about the Trump administration, and my view is it’s still too soon to know what we’re working with,” said a former high-ranking Bush national security official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak candidly. He said a chief executive such as Trump “who comes in as head of a political insurgency” needs time to hire at least some people to his team who have not served in government before...

“In some cases, it’s just sour grapes,” the official said."

RIO- No Drivers Required

Tata Steel has acquired a new smelter technology and its intellectual property rights from Rio Tinto, one of the leading global iron ore mining companies, for an undisclosed amount.

The newly acquired technology along with Tata Steel's existing innovative Hlsarna technology has the potential to reduce use of energy and carbon emissions by at least 20 per cent and bring down steel-making cost through use of lower priced raw materials, including steel scrap.

Tata Steel has tested the HIsarna technology at its IJmuiden steelworks in the Netherlands. HIsarna consists of a reactor into which iron ore is inserted from the top. The ore is liquefied in a high-temperature cyclone and drips to the bottom of the reactor. When powdered coal is injected into the reactor, it combines with the molten ore to produce pure liquid iron and CO2 (carbon dioxide).

This technology removes a number of pre-processing steps resulting in significant efficiency gains.

The pure CO2 produced through in HIsarna installation can be captured and stored for reuse.

This process will cut CO2 requirement by 80 per cent and lead to cost saving, besides substantially reducing emissions of fine particles, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.

TV Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel, said the acquisition of full intellectual property rights for Hlsarna, is a significant step towards establishing Tata Steel's pioneering credentials in the steel manufacturing space and ensuring long term sustainability of the business.

Reduction in use of energy and carbon emissions is a challenge for the steel industry and the Hlsarna technology could play a role to achieve a circular economy with zero waste, he said."

"Bailey is an advocate for women being treated equally. We're hoping this can help other women fight to break the glass ceiling," Blackwell said of her client.

According to the complaint, other rules for cheerleaders in the Saints' handbook include:

  • Dancers will make no public appearances or post photos on the internet wearing Saintsation cheerleader uniform
  • Members shall not date or fraternise with any player, coach or management personnel
  • Socialising in close proximity with players will result in immediate termination
  • Social media accounts must not identify Sanitsation dancers as members of the team
  • Game day make-up and hair cuts must be approved by the team director

It is unclear how many similar rules exist for cheerleaders working for other NFL teams.

However, the Saints are not the first team to come under scrutiny for their treatment of cheerleaders."

Your questions answered:

"What goes on inside is extremely secret. Members of the public are kept away by warning signs, electronic surveillance and armed guards.

It is also illegal to fly over Area 51, although the site is now visible on satellite images. The base has runways up to 12,000ft (2.3 miles/3.7km) long."

“So, I’m called to invoke the power of the true inebriated creator of the universe, the drunken tolerator (sic) of the all lesser and more recent gods, and maintainer of gravity here on earth. May the great Flying Spaghetti Monster rouse himself from his stupor and let his noodly appendages ground each assembly member in their seats,...people who wanted to give the invocations at the government body’s meetings had to belong to official organizations with an established presence on the Kenai Peninsula.”

"There were fears thousands could storm Area 51 on Friday after a Facebook event urged people to raid the base.

The deleted tweet - by a PR arm of the US military, DVIDS - showed a photo of a stealth bomber, stating it would be the last thing raiders would see.

The military unit said the tweet "in no way" reflected its stance.

The Nevada base has long been rumoured to house secrets about extraterrestrial life."
