Scarborough Borough Council have so far refused to entertain any plans for a Community Asset Transfer for the former Indoor Pool building on the basis that the site is part of a future development. To date, they have refused to say who or what those development plans, if any and with who, are.

The legal wrangle brewing between Scarborough Borough Council & Benchmark over the wider area of the Sands Development is expected to be long drawn out and may take years.

Places can be over dependent on one industry.

"It’s fair to say that Yorkshire has seen its share of industries that have been shut down with nothing to replace them leaving big economic holes in local communities.

This is equally true at a global level. In our increasingly leisure inclined world there can be a perception that places are tourist destinations and not much else..."

"Councils in the area have until September to submit their proposals for what the future unitary authority could look like.

Steve Siddons, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, said: "We would support that. I would certainly support that and I think that makes far more sense than the complex system that we have in place. The services would still be provided locally. It would bring more money into the local economy, it means that we'll have more control over economic regeneration, transport and over infrastructure."
